Use Up The Leftover Rice

Rice is a staple meal for many families in India and across the world too. As a result, rice is cooked practically on a daily basis. And since so much rice is cooked, it is common to have leftover rice lying in the fridge in most households. If you have rice leftovers on a regular basis and don’t know what to do with them, we are here to help! Take a look at this article to get some great ideas on how to recycle the leftover rice and turn it into a new and delicious dish.

  • Rice Tikki:

All you have to do is mash up the rice, add some gram flour, some chopped chillies, chopped coriander leaves, chopped onions and some masala powder. Add cumin, coriander, turmeric and chilli powders also with some salt. Mash it and bring the dough together. Then make small, flat discs with your hand and shallow fry them on a pan. Your crispy, tasty rice tikkis are ready.

  • Rice pudding:

Rice pudding, also known as kheer, is another easy and tasty dish that can be made with leftover rice. Boil some milk, add sugar, some crushed cardamom and then add the cooked rice. Let it all come together. Turn off the heat and add some chopped nuts on top. And just like that, a delicious and healthy plate of rice pudding is ready for you to devour!

  • Rice pancakes:

When you have some rice leftover in the fridge, put it in the mixie and make a smooth batter out of it. Add two eggs to the batter, some honey and a handful of chocolate chips. Fry them as shallow pancakes and serve with a generous dollop of maple syrup. Not only will you be able to put the rice to good use, but you will also have a healthier, gluten-free pancake.

  • Fried rice:

An eternal favourite, there are no limits to what you can do to a bowl of fried rice! You can simply add some eggs and onions and make a bowl of quick stir-fried rice. Or, you can add some elaborate ingredients, sauces and condiments and make it a rich affair. Get innovative and enjoy the meal.

  • Dal khichdi:

An unconventional take on the good ol’ khichdi recipe, all you have to do is make a spicy, dry dal dish and toss it together with the rice. When it is nicely mixed, add a special and hot tadka with ghee, cumin, curry leaves and mustard. You can also add any extra spice that you wish to make it tangy. This dish works wonders and saves you from having the boring ‘dal-chawal’, while you essentially eat that exact same thing!

These are some of the most innovative ways in which you use up the rice that is lying in a box at the back of your fridge and serve a delicious and happy meal to your family.
