Being overweight in teenagers can come with a barrage of problems, both physically and psychologically. And as per a European study in 2010, teenagers with gene-linked obesity can also overcome the situation by working out regularly.

Teenagers who exercise regularly will end up having a lower body fat content, lower BMI, and in quite a lot of cases a smaller waist as well. However, for achieving all of that, you would need to exercise for an hour every day. And it can be overwhelming. Here are a few fitness tips for overcoming such conditions.

  • Realistic Goals:

Losing excess body fat is one proven way of moving towards a healthier life. However, it is crucial to set realistic goals when you want to shed body fat. Setting a goal that is too high will eventually wear you down and demoralize you.

Your primary focus should be on becoming healthier or fitter and not always on the weighing scale.

  • Slash your Sweetened Beverage Intake:

Cutting back on sweetened beverages can aid you drastically in the bid to lose weight. Energy drinks, soda, fruit drinks, and even sweet tea contain sugar in large quantities. Cutting down or completely getting rid of them, is one smart step towards a healthier you.

Too many sweetened beverages can lead to type 2 diabetes, cavities, acne and non-alcoholic fatty liver.

  • Physical Activities:

There are no shortcuts in this. You can start with simple and short additions to your day to day activities and increase them from there. To start with, you can try to reduce the amount of time that you spend sitting. Moving more often throughout the day is an effective way to burn some more calories.

As you increase your physical activities, it helps in adding more muscle mass. This in turn will help your body burn calories. To make it a tad more relishing, you can add activities that you enjoy or like doing. This will keep you stay motivated.

  • Nutritional Food:

Another important aspect of trying to become fit is to keep an eye on what you eat. Merely looking at the calorie intake might not be enough. Make it a habit to choose food based on the nutrients and minerals that they have to offer.

And the body of a teenager needs some nutrients in higher quantities than adults. For example, their growing bodies need more calcium and phosphorus than adults.

Adding more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins, etc. will not only provide your body with essential nutrients but also help you lose weight.

  • Stay Away from Fad Diets:

The intent of losing weight should not lead you to follow some fad diet, with the hopes that you will lose weight quickly in a short span of time. Losing weight and becoming healthier is a process and it will take some time.

There are no shortcuts to losing weight or becoming healthy. Following the above steps diligently and consistently will help you shed some extra kilos and get back to shape.
